He was influenced by Ghandi but came to
a point where he believed violence was
necessary to move forward
After being released from prison, Nelson
participated in the final negotiations to
have a multi-racial election
Mandela was elected president to serve
as the countries first black president

Nelson Mandela served a total of 27
years in prison
18 of those were served on Robben
Island where he performed hard labor
Black prisoners being held for political
reasons were given the fewest privileges
He was a D-list prisoner, the lowest
ranking, so he was allowed only one
letter and one visitor in each 6 month
period
He received his Bachelor of Laws from the
University of London while in prison by
correspondence
